Purpose of Research

We inherit the efforts of Trans-disciplinary (TD) science to fuse traditional knowledge with scientific knowledge developed in “Global Eco-risk Management from Global Viewpoints” (GCOE). We will actively use international efforts such as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Geoparks, Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), etc. with respect to the conservation and use of natural resources based on the UNESCO’s MAB (Man and the Biosphere) program. We also inherit the Former President of YNU, Kunio Suzuki, served as chair of the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO, and “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs). We will attempt to encourage mutual exchanges between experts that contribute to the revitalization of the area utilizing the natural resources of each region, and cooperate with the “Creation and Sustainable Governance of New Commons through Formation of Integrated Local Environmental Knowledge” Project of the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, develop these results, carry out the work of this institution and build a cooperative system with practical activities in each region.

Research content / methods

We will collaborate with members from each region to make progress towards regional SDGs such as MAB Programs, based on methods in TD studies by Professor Tetsu Sato of the Ehime University as a member of JST-RISTEX. We will then propose the lessons of case studies to the world through the MAB Program, IPBES, IPCC, Pew Marine Conservation Fellow Conference, JICA Project and United Nations University IAS etc. Through the domestic network of MAB and case studies in various places, we will propose approaches for TD studies based on studies of ecological risk to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MAB, RISTEX), the Ministry of the Environment (World Heritage, National Parks etc.), Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (wind power generation, ecological risk due to water quality) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (GIAHS).
